To prevent accidents involving forklifts and materials handling equipment, operators and other employees in the vicinity need to be constantly aware of forklift operations—especially with electric forklifts which produce little operating noise.
Beacons are not mandatory on forklifts in New Zealand but are recommended for awareness. Most new forklifts will have them fitted as standard. Where flashing lights or reversing beepers are fitted, operators are responsible to ensure that these are operating correctly.
